Young India(2010) Movie Review

'Young India' Review: Torture Of India

Film: Young India
Rating: 1/5
Banner: Siri Media
Cast: Dasari Narayana Rao, Brahmanandam, Swapna, Venu, Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad along with 81 new Telugu artistes
Music: Keeravani
Editing: Gautham Raju
Cinematography: Ramana Raju
Story, dialogues, screenplay, direction: Dasari Narayana Rao
Producer: K Ramakrishna Prasad
Release date: 15/05/2010

Darsakaratna Dasari Narayana Rao has come up with his 149th directorial venture and according to him, this is meant to be an eye opener for all. How much openings it will get, let us see.

A group of youngsters Abhi, Venky, Razzaq, Rai attempt to commit suicide as they have their own share of tragic flashbacks. However, Keerthi (Sowmya) gets to the spot and the group reveals their stories. She gets them to her father Naidu (Dasari) who is an SP with a Tamil accent. He gives them his piece of mind and this aimless group suddenly emerges to be a new movement called ‘Young India’ fighting against injustice. What happens after that is anyone’s guess.

The lead cast comprises of eight youngsters in total and the rest of the 75 artistes fill the screen. they have done their best to infuse life into their characters but the etching was weak. Since it is their debut attempt, certain drawbacks were seen so they must polish their skills if they are looking to make careers in the industry.

Dasari Narayana Rao was usual with his eccentric dialogues and one fails to understand why he had to take up a Tamil accent. Anyways, he was present at the key instances and was busy beaming with pride while the youngsters keep praising him.

Brahmanandam was annoying and his stereotype expressions and body language gave painful expressions than smiles.

The other supporting cast was okay and did their bit as required.

Analysis:
Dasari is an experienced veteran and is revered in the Tollywood circuit. While one can appreciate his attempt to spread a message, he must realize that at the end of the day, it is the audience that matters and not his whims and fancies.

Some of the general statements that came out during the movie from the audience is “it is better to wear a rug and sleep outside in the sun than watch this film”, in the end a dialogue is said that a girl is attempting to commit suicide, someone in the audience said “maybe she has just seen the film and that’s why she is doing it”.

Apparently, Dasari seems to have built an ivory castle for ‘self dabba’ that he has lost grip of the fundamentals of film making. At any given point of time, it is about his propaganda and his attention seeking while the plot of the movie goes for a toss. While the conceiving and presentation is nowhere near perfection, the final nail in the head is hit by the poor writing and production values. This was meant to be a message oriented flick then one fails to understand how Dasari can encourage youngsters to pick up automatic rifles and blow the guts out of evil doers. All in all, it is a terrible experience for the viewer who will grow old by ten years within film duration.

Don’t risk yourself watching this film

Andari Bandhuvaya (2010) Telugu Movie Review

Film: Andari Bandhuvaya
Rating: 3.25/5

Banner: Utopia Entertainers
Cast: Sharwanand, Padmapriya, Naresh, RK, M S Narayana, Krishna Bhagawan, Vijay Sai, Pragathi, Jeeva and others
Music: Anup Rubens
Written By: Balabhadrapatruni Ramani
Cinematographer: Gummadi Jayakrishna
Direction: Chandra Siddartha
Producer: RK, Chandra Siddartha
Release date: 14/05/2010

It has been quite a while since we saw Chandra Siddartha make his presence felt after the unforgettable ‘Aa Naluguru’, here he is with his somewhat comeback venture so let us have a look.

Story:
Nandu (Sharwanand) hails from a village and he comes to the city. He has a helpful nature and doesn’t hesitate to go out of his way to help others. His colleague Paddu (Padmapriya) is stingy to the core and believes in money saving. A situation leads Nandu to take a portion for rent in the home of Paddu and on another instance, he rushes to see his father (Naresh) in the village. Paddu accompanies him and it is here she experiences the human values and touch. New issues crop up and how Nandu and Paddu face them forms the rest of the story.

Performances:
Sharwanand has been evolving as an actor with each passing movie. After his commendable performance in ‘Prasthanam’ this is yet another valuable performance in his career. He is getting better and better. He performed with great élan in many scenes and portrayed emotions wonderfully.

Padmapriya is a vision of beauty and though her low economic character makes her poor, the natural beauty still glows at all possible sequences. She has proved her mettle in the acting department as well. She appeared like senior Suhasini in some scenes.

Naresh has come up with one of his best performances in the recent past. He fits the bill well and there are few touching moments he gives.

Krishna Bhagawan was outright hilarious. His timing and his style of dialogue delivery gives splits of laughter. He is proving to be one of the most reliable comedians for the Telugu audience and is simply ‘unbeatable’.

The others were quite impressive. Especially RK, the TV artiste who plays the role of Padmapriya’s sister wearing sari, the NRI groom, they have given an impressive performance. Pragathi was natural and others were okay.

Analysis:
It’s a joy to watch a good movie 48 hours before the world watches it, in a premiere show. It’s a movie made by the director of ‘Aa Naluguru’. I starting watching the movie with closed mind-set at the outset. For my eyes those have watched grandeur of artificial settings on screen in many films, initially, it sounded dull and low. I looked at the hero in this film as ‘perfectionist material’ who may bring boredom through out the movie. But slowly, something captivated me and I was drowned in the bliss of humanity. I could see a Utopian Village, Utopian hero and Utopian thought…! It went on as a pleasant journey on the waters of humanity.

Any audience watches a movie connecting himself to the hero on screen. He enjoys the bliss of watching something that hero does, which he cannot do in real life. That has been the success of any cinema since 77 years in India. That has been the connection between the screen hero and common audience. If that were the case, in stead of getting connected to the violent and vulgar elements in a hero, it sounds certainly better to connect with the humanity, sacrifice and service motive in him that can be practiced in daily life.

‘Andari Bandhuvaya’ is one such movie which happens very seldom on Telugu screen. Such films should reach every eye and then surely it reaches its heart. Indeed, it’s a movie that culminates the essence of humanity with eyes and heart. One needs to look at the world with the eyes of this protagonist and need to speak with the heart of the same.

It’s a practical Vedanta, the movie showcases. ‘Live for others to enjoy the true nectar of life’ is the epitome of this film. Many dialogues and scenes in this film cut the heart deep and groove-in a pure form of thought. Writer Balabhadrapaatruni Ramani deserves right mention here.

“Pakshulaki konchem dhanyam, pasuvulaki konchem ghraasam, manishiki konchem saayam- ade jeevitam”- What a quotable dialogue?!

“Bathakadame kaadu, chaavadam kooda costly ye”- What a reality if we look at the present expensive last days on Corporate Hospital beds?!

“Nee Daggara koorchuni kaasepu edavochchaa?!”- What a human angle?! The scene between Padmapriya and Sharwanand is indeed moving.

The film is a feel good treat and it gives a strong message of how a positive outlook in life is required in today’s commercial and materialistic world. It might be too unrealistic to expect the viewers to transform once they see the film but even if one implements or demonstrates atleast 5% of the kindness then the world will be a much better place to live in. This is a clean family entertainer with its own element of humor, sentiment, drama and attachment. The dialogues are the major highlight of the movie while the script is very strong and intense. Screenplay was effective and it was supported well with the background score. Though two songs were non situational, they were well taken and quite melodious. Lyrics by Chaitanya Prasad are sensible and filled with good poetry. Editing was smooth. Costumes were suitable to the backdrop and the art department was realistic. The film has enough substance to make it big in film festival or bag few awards. All it takes is some gentle effort by the makers to promote it in the right manner. This is suitable for all genre of audience and everyone will have a point or two to take back home and use it in their life. Credit must be given to Chandra Siddartha for coming up with a thoughtful venture.

Youngsters should watch it and parents should make their children watch it to cultivate human values.

Bottom Line: Don’t Miss It…..

Rama Rama Krishna Krishna (2010) Telugu Movie Review

Film: Rama Rama Krishna Krishna
Rating: 2.75/5
Banner:
Sri Venkateswara Creations
Cast: Arjun, Ram, Priya Anand, Bindu Madhavi, Nasser, Banerjee, Sayaji Shinde, Brahmanandam, Srinivas Reddy, Pragathi, Bharath, Gracy Singh and others
Dialogues: M Ratnam
Music: M M Keeravani
Cinematography: Sekhar V Joseph
Editing: Gautham Raju
Story, screenplay, direction: Srivass
Producer: Dil Raju
Release date: 12/05/2010

Handsome hero Ram has teamed up with action king Arjun and has arrived with an interesting title ‘Rama Rama Krishna Krishna’.

Ramakrishna (Ram) is a daring guy of the village and rash guy but he respects his father (Nasser) and his ideals. A problem in the family leads him to face the Mumbai don Pawar (Vineeth Kumar)and Ramakrishna discovers the link between Pawar and Ashok Deva (Arjun) who lives in the same village with his sister Priya (Priya). Rama Krishna has a maradalu (Bindu Madhavi) who runs behind him. Who is Ashok Deva and what does Ramakrishna do to solve the problems, whom does Rama Krishna marry at last forms the rest of the story.

Arjun was elegant as usual and he has a composed performance. More than his act, it is his powerful screen presence that always gives an appeal to the audience. He was effective.

Ram looks handsome and gave his performance as required. Though he has put his best efforts, he was unable to deliver the voltage during violent scenes.

Priya was chirpy and beautiful. She has also shown her oomph factor in the songs and her asset is her eyes. However, she must look at building few extra pounds of flesh to get that real sex appeal.

Bindu Madhavi was alright, she didn’t have much of a role but she did her bit providing the visual feast wherever required.

Vineeth Kumar has good expressions and has a streak of comedy face which makes it interesting.

Nasser was natural, Banerjee was neat, Brahmanandam’s comedy lacked appeal, Srinivas Reddy was standard, Sayaji was usual, the actor who did the role of Siva got a meaty role which he did well but he needs to work on his dialogue delivery, the rest of the cast added value as required.

The film runs on a beaten track and there is nothing new or exciting that it offers. There were instances wherein the audience predicted what happens next. The director has picked few bits from here and there as well.

  • The killing of Gracy Singh is a scene that was seen in Ab Tak Chappan/ Siddham
  • Arjun’s flash back has a tinge of ‘Basha’
  • The scene wherein the swamijis search for hero reminds of ‘Bangaru Bullodu’,
  • The last action sequence reminds of ‘Magadheera’.

Graphics were inferior, especially in the car chase sequences where they land at any given place they want without a scratch (wish we had such cars in real, it would have solved the traffic problem).

The script was stale, the screenplay was weak, background score was good but songs were a disappointment.

Cinematography was jarring. Editing could have been better. The good side of the story is the concept of ‘Rama-Krishna’ amulet and the serene presence of Arjun which gives a grace to the film. If only the makers had focused on strengthening the comedy track and providing some unexpected twists, the film would have created an impact. Otherwise, it is just another ‘run of the mill’ story without any variety.

This may survive if other films don’t work. But the audience those come out from theatres exclaim’ ayyo rama..baaboi krishna’…!!

Super Cowboy - Adventure, Cowboy Style!

rating:-2.50/5

South Indian Cinema is growing really fast and testimonial to that is Super Cowboy directed by ‘humour-in-blood director’ Chimbu Deven, who made Himsinche Raju 23va Pulikesi. ‘Super Cowboy’ is the rebirth of the cowboy films in Tamil cinema, a movie that is a mixed bag of entertainment.

Hollywood is a kingpin in the cowboy genre, with a lot of heroes in fact carving a niche for themselves including Gregory Peck, Clint Eastwood and a host of other cowboy heroes. ‘Super Cowboy’ is an inspired movie of one such page from the big book of cowboy history. Firstly, credit and two thumbs up to director Chimbu Deven to make such a movie that needs a lot of effort and specially attention to detail. He has brought out a wholesome entertainment.

Starting the movie with the narration from the director himself about the evolution of cowboy culture in the world, he gives examples of different cowboys in different countries with conclusion of the narration with cowboys in India, in particular south India. Here is introduced Jaishankarpuram, a village that has a lot of cowboys (even cow woman) and horses! Jaishankarpuram is in the clutches of the villain Nasser as Nalla Trachu who lives in the ‘Iron Fort’ in USApuram. Nalla Trachu also dictates terms on five other villages. He is a wicked man, mind you! With only one eye and the other being a dummy!

In between all this, hero Larencce as ‘Simhachalam’ is introduced as a helper. He is good at heart and has adopted four children in his village ‘Sholaypuram’. Due to unforeseen circumstances he is ordered to hang till death and this is where a group of people save him from the hangman’s platform. Larencce is saved by this group headed by Mouli, senior comedian in Tamil. His men are Ilavarasu, Ramesh Kanna and Vaiyapuri who want to save their village from Nalla Trachu. They find Simhachalam similar in appearance to Simham, the brave Marshall who is not to be seen for sometime A deal is negotiated with Larencce who is taken to Jaishankarpuram as Simham.

Larencce is shown as the same brave Marshall Simham who is faster than his shadow. He is as fast as lightning when it comes to shooting the gun. So the new Simham gets accustomed to all the antics of the original Simham. In the village, veteran actors Manorama and Delhi Ganesh are introduced to Larencce. At this juncture Padma Priya is introduced as Bali who instantly finds a soft corner for the hero.

Lets leave the hero’s village now and go to the Villain’s camp at the Iron Fort. Nasser is always in the company of his close aides Lakshmi Priya and seasoned Telugu actor Sai Kumar. Sai Kumar is the right hand of the villain who goes by the order of his boss. In between the hero’s and the villain’s camp is a Red Indian village where the tribals are pure vegetarians. With the introduction of this village in the movie, MS Bhasker, the leader of the tribal group, his father Senthil, and his beautiful daughter Sandhya are also introduced. The funniest character in the movie, Sams as Lee the translator of the tribal language is also introduced in this point. The Red Indians are pivotal in the story of the movie. It is for you to find out at the theatre!

The gist of the story: The villagers at Jaishankarpuram find a map that is hidden in their ‘Timesquare’. But it is only one half they have. They have to find the other half to hunt for treasure that is preserved and hidden somewhere far away. But the villain, Nasser has other plans. He negotiates a deal of freeing prisoners in exchange of the treasure. Does the Marshall Simham along with Sai Kumar, Lakshmi Rai, Vaiyapurai, Ilavarasu, MS Bhasker and Sams find the treasure? The answer awaits your presence in this not-to-be-missed entertainer!

Larencce as the hero has flaunted his natural style. The man oozes with confidence for having bagged such a coveted cowboy role. But the real hero of this movie is director Chimbu Deven. He has developed a screenplay that is not dragging, not boring and most importantly highly entertaining. He has proved it yet again; he is a director who thinks out-of-the-box! The narration is highly innovative. Sample this – The village priest also wears a cowboy hat, suggesting him to be a cowboy priest! Many more funny things for you to see at the theatre including websites for their village heroes! Translator of the tribal Sams as Lee and his translations are really funny and give the audience a healthy laugh. All the actors have done a commendable job, given their character’s scope.

Chimbu Deven makes the audience not just giggle but laugh out loudly at most times of the movie. The director has also chosen his team very carefully. The cinematographer Azhagappan has done a tremendous job of handling his camera. The adventure scenes, the horse chase sequences and even picturing the songs are truly appreciable. At this juncture, one would be in awe of the sets that have been designed to get the feel of the cowboy film. Be it the guns in the movie, the Jaishankarpuram village, the Iron Fort, the imaginary mountains (help of computer graphics) or the treasure caves, art director Muthuraj receives full marks for his extraordinary art direction. He has crafted a true cowboy village and the visuals will transport you to that world.

Equally receiving praise is costume designer Sai, who has got the right clothes to suit the story. Every character in the movie gets a hat! The Red Indians and their costumes are designed well, completing the attire! Make up for the actors, especially the rotten teeth of Sai Kumar and the empty eye of Nasser is significantly noticeable by Nehru.

The pace of the movie is thoroughly enjoyable. Songs are not at awry places and the screenplay does not have a lag, especially handling a few flashback scenes in the middle that talk about the original Simham. Editing has been immaculate. Editor Raja Mohammed, the national award winning editor for Paruthi Veeran, has done an amazing job.

Moving to the music, with a dancer like Larencce as the hero, G V Prakash has done a good job composing a few peppy numbers. Re-recording in the movie is appreciable and so is the choreography, in a few songs dance is worth mentioning. Larencce, dance masters Sridhar and Siva Shankar are the choreographers in the movie.

The movie scores marks in almost all departments. Minuses exist but not in large numbers. Heroines Padma Priya, Lakshmi Rai and Sandhya could have been used effectively. The background music by G V Prakash is heavily inspired by adventure classic ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’.

Comedy forms the basis of the movie. Chimbu Devan has evoked laughter many a time and like his all his movies, the absence of vulgarity makes this a family entertainer. Cowboy hats, horses and the shelling guns, Super Cowboy succeeds in entertaining you effortlessly! Kudos to the Super Cowboy team!

It’s A Wonderful Afterlife Movie Review

What is it all about?

Gurinder ‘bends’ this like a weirdo. ‘It’s a Wonderful Afterlife’ is a dark comedy that yields strange reactions rather than outright laughs. Catty satire on the eating obsession, the problem is that this starts weirdly and ends dramatically which makes any audience unlikely to warm to this wickedly cold-hearted tale of love despite the abundance of some fine acting display.

The Story……of course

Mrs. Sethi (Shabana Azmi), a widow, can't bear the thought of her daughter being alone and unhappy. When Mrs. Sethi can no longer stomach the rudeness of families who refuse her daughter, she takes matters into her own hands with the only way she knows... suddenly a police hunt begins for a serial murderer.

Mrs. Sethi doesn't feel too guilty until the spirits of her victims come back to haunt her, as they are unable to be reincarnated until their murderer dies. Mrs. Sethi has no problem killing herself - she'll get to see her dead husband again - but how can she go before her daughter is married? The spirits realize that helping Mrs. Sethi find a suitable husband for her daughter, before the police catch her, is their only chance for a wonderful afterlife.

What to look out for?

Artistically, the associated banners can be commended for backing such an unusual and risky project, but that's not what it needs right now.

The only moment that lives up to the film's potential involves Goldy Notay and Sendhil Ramamurthy.

The obsessed mom is amazingly played by Shabana Azmi and Goldy Notay as the fat and lovely daughter is likable. Sendhil impresses.

What not?

Despite inspired casting and an interesting plot Gurinder Chadda’s ‘It’s a wonderful Afterlife’ figures as a major disappointment. The helmer never really gets past the skeletal plot. Script is turns out to be a weird pun on Indians and their eating habits made in a spoofy horror way and it’s not funny.

The performers work gamely, but audience if there will be could laugh at only the bizarre start and the first interaction of the chicken tikka injected and dough pasted and oh yes, the intestine planted ghost who want to be reincarnated because an obsessed mother kills them weirdly as they reject her fat and lovely daughter.

Audiences will gasp till the end trying to figure out what the hell are they watching.

If being international and crossover is pleasing those goras who still believe that India is a pack of jokers, then it’s a pity which makes you laugh a loud not on the film bit on their mentality that they found this weird childishness to be worth investing.

Conclusion: Allow this ghost to pass

Badmaash Company Movie Review

What is it all about?

‘Badmaash Company’ is a film about guys in haste who wanna smell money as soon as possible, the movie has a ‘real’ feel to it. Efforts can be seen in first timer Parmeet Sethi’s attempt which is more authentic towards being a drama which ironically runs on a handsomely budgeted thriller lane that ‘steals’ the movie’s prospects to be a crowd-pleaser.

The Story……of course

‘Badmaash Company’ is set in the 1990s in middle class Mumbai, of four ordinary youngsters (Shahid Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Meiyang Chang and Vir Das), who came together to start an import business of things longed for by yuppie Indians. What made their venture such a stupendous success was the fact that they found a way to beat the system and soon became the undisputed kings in their business, realizing their one dream of making quick money is by doing all the wrong things the right way.

Living the life of champagne wishes and caviar dreams, the four friends discover that to make a business successful, you don't need big money. All you need is a big idea. All is well and hunky dory till one day the four maverick entrepreneurs are forced to shut shop.

What to look out for?

Having the identifiable emotions of today’s youth, ‘Badmaash Company’ is ruled by Shahid Kapoor as you can easily make out there’s a genuine love of performing behind it. Shahid makes a true honest attempt to lit up the film, fails but manages enact a character with a rich psychology. Proving that he can find the shadings in every hue.

Anushka looks pretty and her chemistry with Shahid is striking. Meiyang Chang has the zing while Vir Das is quite impressive. Anupam Kher and Kiran Juneja along with Pawan Malhotra are competent as ever.

Dialogues are entertaining, some truly spectacular shooting in Bangkok and USA where the scenes between the gang is likable.

Musically not a bad selection of tunes by Pritam Chakraborty. The movie has superb production values.

What not?

Despite all the fun, however, the thorny questions raised by the debutant con flick which borrows real life incidents like the ‘Madras Bleeding’ of the 60’s, the home loan scam in America which pulled its economy down and the import strategy of Indian importers etc to make a ‘con’ movie. The absence of innovations and creativity in the con which is the genders basic requirement is it major drawback. The writer doesn’t pen con on his own for the film and on top of that this gang is never in news or discussions in police headquarters that kills the excitement of the audience who starts believing that nobody is bothered whether this guys steal or they fight the ignorance of this basic factors in a con movie is troubling. The wealth, power, and privilege that allow Shahid to effortlessly trade it in for a new con down the line are given a free pass.

‘Badmaash Company’ idea might be of scamming, fast bucks, self inventory, friends, wealth and friendship which starts with a voice over that makes it feel like an autobiographical drama, all this mistakes and the little regard for suspense or audience sophistication needed in a con movie and the last 30 minutes……. repeat 30 minutes during the second half where unnecessary.

Conclusion: Go if you really must.

Analysis:

The film is a pure mass oriented movie and while the first half goes about with a college backdrop, the entire momentum changes in the second half. To all those who wanted to see the fiery eyed Balakrishna, this will be a major treat. The storyline is predictable and the plot is weak but the execution was nice. Background score was good and songs were the highlight. Editing was alright, art department was grand, overall, the film will go well with the masses and will ensure huge profits to the makers. A must watch for all people who love powerful mass entertainers. This film will be a milestone in Balakrishna's career.

Verdict: Watch it to know how a Simham Roars!

Viswanath, Hanumantha Rao and many of their old pals meet together and Nandini too is present there. Prabhas starts to meet her. What events take place between Nandini and Prabhas, do they really love each other or not forms the rest of the story.

Analysis

This film reveals the affection that exists in a childhood friendship. The bond between a father and a son is shown in a very affectionate way. Sensible humor without any vulgarity is a rarity these days. This film has great and clean comedy to entertain the audience. Karunakaran is famous for his sensible touch of sentiments. Credit goes to the director for the beautiful narration of the story.

Scenes in Switzerland have great scenic beauty. The fake story of the hero to escape from the villain is a novel and humorous idea. And there enters the girl in the second part of the film, very similar to his description to the villain. This increases the audience interest towards the film. At last we have a summer breezer film for the story starved telugu audience. The director must be congratulated for the well narrated film and providing a hit for Prabhas as well.

Perspective

Action:-
Prabhas:- Gave a great performance in the lead role. Improved expressions and dance moments add to his performance.
Kajal Agarwal:- Nice character as Nandini, it involved her sensible and glamorous performance. She gave great performance.

Other character actors like Chandramohan, Ahuti Prasad, Mukhesh Rushi, Tulasi, Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam and others did justice to their characters.

Technical Department:-

Story

Analysis

Perspective

Story

Lokanatham is a strong leader with a record of four times win from his locality. Mitra (Sarvanand) is his adopted son. He too follows his fathers and grooms into a youth leader. Lokanatham's son Chinna (Sandeep) is jealous of his step brother's popularity in the youth. Addicted to drugs and alcohol, Chinna rapes and kills the daughter of Basha, his father's follower. What events follow and how events take strange turns forms the rest of the story.

Analysis

Director Devakatta, appreciated for his debut film Vennela, a sensible love story, took a political subject with family backdrop. He handles the theme well. The character, Lokanatham, depicts basic human psychology. In his attempt to hide the truth, and the extremes he goes in saving his son brings out his animalistic tendencies. Prasthanam in English means "journey made to achieve a goal", and the director succeeds in his Prasthanam. The second part of the film is more intriguing.

Perspective

Action:-
Sarvanand gave excellent performance as the youth leader. He emoted well and did justice to his role. Sandeep as the drug addict impresses with his acting talent. Sai Kumar proves his performance as the seasoned politician, protective father and rules the story as the central character. Jayaprakash Reddy's role entertains as Bangaru Naidu. Other actors too did justice to their roles.

Technical Department :-

The few songs that are tuned are well scored and meaningful. Re-recording is excellent.
Cinematography:- Cinematographer Shyam Dutt gave neat cinematography.
Direction:- Dev Katta must be appreciated for his skillful handling of the tough subjt like politics.

'Prasthaanam' Telugu Movie Review: Powerful & Philosophical

Film: Prasthaanam
Rating: 3/5
Banner: V R C Media and Entertainments
Cast: Sharwanand, Sandeep, Sai Kumar, Ruby Parihar, Jeeva, Jayaprakash Reddy, Vennela Kishore, Surekha Vani, Reshma, Ghosh, master Atulith, Balayya etc
Music: Mahesh Shankar
Editing: Dharmendra Kakarala
Cinematography: Shyam Dutt
Story, screenplay, direction: Deva Katta
Producer: Vallabhaneni Ravi
Release date: 16/04/2010

Deva Katta is back after a hiatus of sorts and unlike his last venture Vennela which was a romantic treat, he has taken up a rather serious political subject, whether he is successful or not let us see.

Story:
Lokanath (Saikumar) is very active in politics and is a key person to a party. A sequence of events gets his leader killed and he ends up marrying the leader’s wife and looks after their family.

Deceased leader’s son Mitra (Sharwanand) follows Loki’s footsteps and grows as a leader. However, Loki has his own son Chinna (Sandeep) who is keen on entering politics but is disregarded.

He turns against everyone and that creates a major chaos in the family. What happens after that forms the rest of the story.

Performances:
Sharwanand has got a key role to play but then the first half sees him rather subdued, it is during the second half one gets to see his potential. Given the powerful character, Sharwanand should have worked on his dialogue delivery at few places. Overall, he did a good job.

Sandeep is a revelation. Despite his fresh attempt, he has shown phenomenal confidence in front of the camera and has scored the brownie points. His performance leaves an impact and he has got a bright future.

Sai Kumar is apt for the role and shows the required maturity and composure. Few of his dialogues were intense and deep but only the dialogue king can give that punch to it. He should start focusing on bagging more roles on the silver screen and utilize his potential to the fullest.

Jeeva was the best bet as contractor Basireddy and he shows enough venom, Jayaprakash Reddy was hilarious, Vennela Kishore failed to impress, Ghosh as inspector made his presence felt, he is one to look out for in the future, Ruby was there for songs, Surekha Vani was standard, Reshma looks ravishingly beautiful, more focus should be kept on her. The other artistes who hail from the ‘Chakravaakam’ serial have done a fabulous job.

Analysis:
The film is ideally a political thriller but it is merely a backdrop that depicts the various shades of human emotions and how man can resort to extremities in life purely out of greed. The dialogues were mind blowing but a few could go above the head for the mass audience, the script was strong and the screenplay was effective. Background score was awesome and all the songs were good. Full marks to cinematography and art department, editing was crisp. The real strength of the film is the dialogues and the storyline.

On the flip side, two songs during the second half were unnecessary and they have dragged the film to an extent. The film is quite serious and there is a strong dose of philosophy despite the scenarios.

Content wise the movie has got it all but in a layman sense, there are places when the mass audience will find it hard to connect. The first half goes of breezily but the second half gets dragged to an extent.

Not much of a thing for family audience. Overall, this is a hard hitting treat and deals with complex human emotions so those who like such stuff will relish it.

Bottom line: Not for families, more of the intellectual type.

It is this brazen attitude which has led him to make films like ‘Operation Dhuryodhan’ and most recently ‘Mental Krishna’, ‘Raja Vari Chepala Cheruvu’. His latest film ‘Gentleman’ is yet another bold film which has an important message for the society. Posani Krishna Murali, Aarthi Agarwal and Louis play the lead roles in this film. Nallam Padmaja produced the film on the ‘Veerabhadhra Productions’ banner. The film is about a married couple and how their relationship changes over a period of time.

What is it about
Posani Krishna Murali stars as Muddu Krishna, who works in a software firm. He’s married to Neeraja (Aarthi Agarwal) who believes that her husband is extremely loyal to her and would even die for her sake. However, Muddu Krishna has a different side to his personality. He’s a womanizer who indulges in multiple extra-marital affairs for pleasure. One of them is Louis, a girl from UK working in the same software firm. One day, Neeraja decides to test her husband’s loyalty towards her and hatches a plan with the help of a friend. Will she succeed in her plan? Will Muddu Krishna’s skeletons tumble out of the box? That forms the rest of the story.

What is Good
Posani Krishna Murali’s unconventional stories, peculiar characterisation and slap-on-the-face kind of dialogues make it difficult to watch his films like any other film. He sets his own rules and in that sense, Posani definitely excels in everything he does. Within ten minutes into the film, the ‘Posanian’ school of thought raises its flag and it doesn’t matter if the society agrees of not, Posani would do what he believes in. Hence, don’t be surprised if you find him boozing on the road while he lets his wife have her share of privacy with her boyfriend. Don’t be surprised if you see that

1) Posani drinks acid like it’s a cool drink and doesn’t get hospitalised.
2) Posani drinks ‘Baygon Spray’ and get well within 30 minutes.
3) Posani donates his liver to his own wife.
4) Posani argues that it’s okay to manipulate woman irrespective of their marital status.
5) Posani’s “Coffee-Love” hypothesis to test his wife’s love quotient for him
6) Posani can make any girl fall in love with him. ANY GIRL!
7) Posani’s version of ‘7 stages of a project’ with a girl enticing boy twist!
8) Posani can rap and play saxophone!
9) Posani can hack passwords and make Login.js file disappear.
10) Posani can handle multiple ‘encounters’ with women on the same day.

What is bad
The film suffers from a bad casting. Aarthi Agarwal recites her lines meticulously without any emotions for the most part. The only part where you genuinely sympathize with her is the scene where she discovers the true nature of her husband. She’s loud throughout the film and could have done a much better job. Newcomer Louis has a meaty role apart from having to show lot of flesh. While she succeeds in the latter part, she fails to make a mark in her role. It would have been a lot better if Posani had retained her dialogues in English, instead of giving her dialogues to speak in butler Telugu. She hardly moves an inch of her facial muscles and the only expression which comes out when she’s angry and kicking Posani’s butt all over the garden. Kota Srinivas Rao’s role as a scientist who’s conducting an experiment on the sex lives of ‘Rats’ is poorly written and unnecessary in the film. If this wasn’t enough, Posani (the writer) writes an essay on what differentiates Human Beings from rats/pigs. It’s an insult to the community of Rats and if they could understand our language, probably they would revolt or maybe ‘fast’ to teach humans a lesson.

Bottom Line
‘Gentleman’ has an important message and it’s a 2 hour guide of ‘What Not to Do when you are married!’ The film has been shot mostly inside bungalows or guest houses and the cinematography required for such a film is adequate. Background score is decent and thankfully it never gets too loud. In the end, the film belongs to one man only, Posani Krishna Murali. Love him or hate him, you can’t ignore him for what he is. He wrote the story, dialogues and screenplay for the film apart from acting and directing in it. His trademark style can be seen in the dialogues and acting more than anything else. To watch a Posani Krishna Murali’s film requires some prior homework to be done. Do watch his earlier films like ‘Mental’ Krishna, Raja Vari Chepala Cheruvu to get an idea of what kind of films Posani makes. The film is high on testosterone and surprisingly the humongous amount of sleaze depicted in ‘Mental’ Krishna has been reduced here. ‘Gentleman’ is strictly for fans and admirers of Posani. You wouldn’t want to take a risk of going to one of his films without any mental preparation.

P.S
Medically, a human being would die within minutes if the ‘Liver’ is removed from the body. However, in ‘Gentleman’ the actors spare a full 2 hours to listen to Muddu Krishna’s version of why he had to donate the liver. Phew…anything is possible in ‘Posanian’ world!
