Interview with Seenu Vytla

Seenu Vytla – the king of entertainment – spoke at length with idlebrain.com about his Sankranthi release Namo Venkatesa starring Venkatesh and Trisha. He discusses the box office performance of Namo Venkatesa and gives details of his next project with Mahesh Babu. Here are the excerpts -

How is Namo Venkatesa doing at Box Office?
Namo Venkatesa turned out to be the biggest hit in my career as well as Venkatesh’s career. This is my first movie in Sankrathi season and I am realising the potential of Sankranthi season through the collections amassed by Namo Venkatesa. This film sold on NRA (Non-returnable advance) basis to all the distributors. All of them are happy and are giving excellent predictions about the movie’s box office performance. My earlier biggest hit’s collections are going to be crossed by Namo Venkatesa in 6 days in East Godavari area. Namo Venkatesa was released in Rajahmundry in 4 theatres and the distributor has to increase the number to 8 on the day two. Venkatesh has got great following in Vizag area and Namo Venkatesa is going to collect one crore more than Venkatesh’s previous biggest hit. It is going to collect 6 crores share in Ceded area. Nizam’s openings are extraordinary.

What is the reason for Namo Venkatesa’s box office performance?
I would give the first credit to Venkatesh’s characterization. Big heroes would shy away from doing such a role . Brahmanandam makes the hero a bakra in the movie. Hero has to dance to Arya 2 songs. Venkatesh said that he was keeping a blind faith on me and gave complete freedom and cooperation to me.

What are the high points in the movie?

1. Jathakam episode
2. Interview scene
3. Driking scene (the biggest high point in the movie)
4. Non-stop laughter from interval to the 5th song.
5. Entertaining chase scene towards climax.

The songs of the movie also helped a lot to the movie. We used chopper to have aerial shots of greenery in Iceland for Soundarya song. We went to virgin locations in Iceland despite of low oxygen levels and dangerously narrow roads. It all paid off when we watched such beautiful locations on the big screen.

You have your signature comedy in your movies. Don’t you think you are becoming repetitive with themes and scenes over a period of time?
I think you are referring to scenes like drinking scenes in the movie. I asked NRK Reddy (distributor of Vizag) if I can take off drinking scene in Namo Venkatesa. He said that drinking scenes in Amitab Bachchan films were hugely entering and successful. Likewise, when crowds go to SeenuVytla moves, they expect a good drinking scene. I was in two minds about it first and had to think over it for 10 days in Kodaikanal. And finally, I decided to go with it. It turned out to be the most entertaining scene in Namo Venkatesa.

Brahmanandam was hilarious in your earlier movies, but he played a slightly negative role in this movie. Master Bharat was hugely entertaining in your earlier movies because he is shown as a naughty guy. But in this movie, he plays a positive character of helping the hero. What is the reason for designing their characters differently?
Priya Darshan is known for such themes. He used Paresh Rawal as comedian, character actor and villain. I wanted to show different shades of these actors. Another reason why I did so is due to the ability of Venkatesh in comedy department. Venkatesh is one of the finest heroes in India who has excellent command on comedy department.

There is a complaint that the love angle is not treated properly?
It was more like one-way love in this movie. Hence we need not show any love orientation from Trisha’s side. Hence it is not possible to go into depth regarding love aspect as we concentrated mainly on entertainment.

There are comments that the movie became prolonged and formulaic towards the end?
The main reason for Namo Venkatesa to become a blockbuster is due to the sentiment that worked in the last fifteen minutes. It really helps to have action episodes in order for the film to work at box office in Ceded area. Hence we designed nice and entertaining action episodes to satisfy mass movie lovers.

You are known for quick execution of projects. Tell us about Namo Venkatesa details?
We shot the entire movie in a span of 5 months despite of Trisha’s lack of dates, Jaya Prakash going to USA for 15 days and Venkatesh taking rest for 15 days due to Chikungunya. We finished the movie in 90 working days. We shot the chase scenes in just 3 days. We hired chopper for just 2 hours to complete the aerial shots in Soundarya song. We exposed 1.35 lac feet of negative footage.

Tell us about the technicians?
I have a specially appreciation for our 24-year old editor Varma who worked for days together without any sleep. Writer Gopi Mohan understands the way I think and we have great wavelength match and it worked really well during scripting stage. He patiently accompanied me for a year to help us out in the movie. Devi Sri Prasad gave nice music and very good re-recording. Art director AS Prakash is excellent. Prasad Murella gave his best work in this movie.

Tell us about your next movie with Mahesh?
I had been doing films to satisfy the taste of audiences. I have a personal taste and I never got any opportunity to a film that I would really love to make. The action parts in my previous films are appreciated by movie lovers. Not many people know that I get highly tensed while directing comedy scenes and I am extremely relaxed when doing action sequences. Mahesh’s movie is going to be a beautiful love story with nice action elements and my kind of entertainment. Mahesh has specifically told me not miss out on my signature entertainment/comedy. It is going to be a love story I am attempting after Anandam movie. It is going to be a visual poetry and it will be shot in North Indian locations like Ladakh.

Tell us how much did it cost to make Namo Venkatesa and how much it is going to collect?
The budget of Namo Venkatesa is around 20 crores and it is going to collect over 30 crores in AP along in the long run.

Vedam on 27 May?

Vedam is likely to postpone from 20 May to 27 May. The delay is attributed to the special care taken in authentic sound design. Touted as the true multistarrer of the modern times in Telugu cinema, Vedam sports Allu Arjun, Manoj Manchu and Anushka playing three of the five vital characters. An elder man called Nagayya makes his debut in one of the main characters. Manoj Bajpai play another vital role. Krish is directing this award winning Gamyam.

Interview with Siddharth

Siddharth says he is changing his image from a lover boy to lover man in Oy!, terms it as an epic love story and assures us that Oy! will be an ideal date movie. Read many more interesting anecdotes about 3 July release Oy in this idlebrain.com exclusive interview with Siddharth -

Tell us about Oy!
Oy is the shortest titled movie in my career. It comes with the tagline ‘His first love called him Oy’. I fell for that tagline. It is an impact making title. I had done a lover boy character with family backdrop in films like NVNV, Bommarillu and KIKK. But Oy is a love story of epic proportion with no family background attached to it. It is my first pure love story. There will be tremendous energy levels in the movie.

Oy! Audio turned out to be a chartbuster. What is your role as album producer for this movie?
All my films had successful audio so far. I acted as an album producer for Oy and my involvement in music is there right from the first composition to the last mixing. Yuvan Shankar Raja gave mostly dubbing musical hits in Telugu except for AMAV. The sales of Oy album are on rage and they released the 4th bunch into the market recently. Ilaya Raja is like a God for me. I couldn’t work with him and now I have the satisfaction of working with his son Yuvan Shankar Raja. He also sang a song in this album. I feel that visuals and music provide life to any love story. The music an movie of Oy! will complement each other.

Tell us about the title song you sung for this movie?
It was Chakri who asked me to sing a song in Chukkallo Chandrudu. Then Bhaskar asked me to sing Appudo song. I am not a great singer, but I can put energy into my singing. I can transport the energy of character into my voice. The song in sung in Oy! is the simplest song in that album.

Which is your favourite among Oy songs?
Povadde Prema (Yuvan Shankar Raja sung it) and Waiting for You (KK sung it). These two songs are the emotional songs. And emotional songs hold me in love stories. Vanamali came up with terrific lyrics for these two songs. We just finished shooting ‘waiting for you’ and it’s beautiful. This song took me back to ‘O Priya Priya’ song from Geetanjali movie.

The tagline of this movie is ‘His first love called him Oy!’. Who is your first love?
Cinema is my first love (giggles)

Tell us about the director Anand Ranga?
I have done six films so far in Telugu and five of them are directed by the first timers. Anand Ranga is the quietest director I worked with so far. I trust Anand Ranga the most after Prabhudeva among the directors I worked with. Anand has lots of clarity. He could able to translate whatever he penned in script onto the screen. Oy! is one person’s journey depicted through Anand Ranga’s voice. Oy is a poetic love story.

Why are you hiding Shamili in publicity and promotion of the movie?
The director and the producer want to hide Shamili from the public so that it arises curiosity. By doing so, audiences will be able to travel with heroine character better when they watch the movie. I feel that heroine’s characterization is very important for any movie to click. Shamili is a natural performer.

From whatever little glimpse we had about Shamili in the posters, she looks pretty ordinary with no glamour angle attached to it. Does the heroine character demands an ordinary looking girl?
Shamili plays a realistic character in this movie and she is the perfect cast for the role.

What are the highlights of Oy?
Oy is an epic love story mounted on grand scale with nice visuals, sound and characterizations. The comedy in this movie is going to be better than that of NVNV. We shot the movie in lots of grand locations (Kolkota, Bihar, Waranasi, Indian Oceon, Bangalakhatam, Melbourne etc). Oy is going to be very sound in technical side. We shot the movie in air (helicopter), earth and water (under sea). We erected a beautiful set in Rishi Konda (Vizag). Visuals have special scheme to it.

Tell us about the cinematographer Vijay?
He worked for Bommarillu and KIKK in the past and I respect him as a cinematographer. He can improve our performances with his work. A cinematographer sees the work even before director. The visuals of this movie are grand.

What is the reason for doing Telugu films in quick succession though you are in demand in Tamil and Hindi as well?
I consider myself as a full-time Telugu hero. I want to do as many films as I can in Telugu for the next two years. I am proud that a film like KIKK ran successfully in the time of recession. My career is on high despite of global meltdown.

You are looking good in Oy. How did you do the styling?
Lots of effort goes into styling me and my character. And I played the role of a young lover boy in all my films so far. In Oy, I appeared like a man, not like a boy. Hence I look more macho in this movie. Oy is my best styled movie. Director Anand Ranga presented me well. He came up with character sketches. I was given character sketches for Oy and RDB among the films I have done. Anand Ranga gave me lot of detailing in the character so that I could understand it well and enliven the character on the screen.

Do you want to continue with the image of a lover boy?
Yes. I stick to my strengths. But I make sure that I do characters that challenge me as an actor. Shahrukh Khan has been doing the roles of lover boy for the past 25 years and he is still looking fresh today. I shouldn’t get bored as an actor. While other actors are doing mass movies, I am doing mass production of love stories (giggles).

Tell us about producer Danayya?
Danayya has been asking for my dates for the past 3 years. I told him that I would set the project up and approach him with the director and story. Like Nallamalupu Bujji, Danayya too is looking to produce a sensible love story after doing several mass blockbusters. Danayya is also a quiet guy like the director Anand Ranga.

You are a rage among girls. Who is the target audience for Oy?
It is a misconception that only girls like to watch my movies. Guys too watch my movies because they have to drive girls (giggles). Jokes apart, Oy! will be an ideal date movie.

Interview with Surya

Surya made a name for himself in Telugu as a flamboyant small-town smart guy in Siva Putrudu and a man with recurring amnesia in Ghajini. His latest film Veedokkade (Ayan in Tamil) is all set to release on 1st May. Surya is in Hyderabad to promote Veedokkade and attend the premiere of the movie. Idlebrain.com met him for an interview and here are the excerpts

Tell us about your previous outing Surya s/o Krishnan?
When Gowtam Menon narrated the story, I couldn’t resist. It was supposed to be a soft love story in the beginning. But the story of the movie underwent a change after Gowtam Menon’s father passed away. Gowtam introduced father’s character in the movie inspired by his father. That is the reason why sons connect with their fathers after watching this movie.

What is the financial outcome of the movie?
This film was sold for Rs 25 crores in Tamil and it collected Rs 25 crores. Surya s/o Krishnan became an abandoned child after the release as the producer didn’t care to promote the movie.

Tell us about Veedokkade?
Veedokkade is another type of entertainer. The story of this movie is inspired by articles that came in newspapers. Lots of magic happened while making Veedokkade film and it will be lost if it is remade in Telugu. That is the reason why it is being dubbed in Telugu. Veedokkade is about the mind game with an intelligent screenplay. The Tamil version generated great openings because the producer promoted the movie heavily.

Tell us about the hero character in Veedokkade?
It is not a regular hero type character. The characterization is highly realistic. I loved the screenplay. Jagan played the role of Godfather in the movie. I was so much impressed by Jagan’s character that I asked the director if I could play Jagan’s role.

Do you have any inspiration to mold yourself in the hero character of Veedokkade?
Yes. I took 'Catch Me If You Can' as the reference. Leonard Decaprio has done a terrific portrayal in that movie where he would do unimaginably daring things with cool demeanor. I also like Amitab Bachchan’s way of portraying realism even though his films are completely commercial. I took that aspect from Amitab Bachchan as well. I got lots of compliments that my acting is very natural in Veedokkade movie.

What are the other highlights of Veedokkade?
It cost twice the budget of Surya s/o Krishnan. We shot the movie in virgin locations in Africa. Yamakasi style fights were choreographed by foreign stunt choreographers.

You seem to be having a flexible body?
I am an ardent fan of Kamal Hassan and I admire the way he jumps from one character in one film to an entirely different character in another film. Kamal Hassan is my big inspiration. And that character should motivate me to experiment with my looks.

Tell us about your 18-year old character in Surya s/o Krishnan. How did you manage such tender looks?
My costume designer challenged me that heroes try to manage the looks without putting any real efforts. I took it as a challenge and shed 10 kgs in a span of 22 days. I went to my gym and consulted the dietician. I followed GM diet (General Motors diet) for those 22 days. I used to work out and burn 1000 calories a day. I also made sure that I got enough sleep. I drank lots of water. And the result was that I reduced my weight from 75 kgs to 65 kgs.

How did you get the 6-pack for Surya s/o Krishnan?
I got a nice advice from Aamir Khan who was building 6-pack for Hindi Ghajini. He recommended me his trainer from Delhi. It took around 5 months to build 6-pack.

Which one do you like – Tamil Ghajini or Hindi Ghajini?
I liked the script changes in Hindi Ghajini.

What are your top 5 films among the ones you did?

1. Nanda
2. Khakha Khakha
3. Pithamagan
4. Ghajini
5. Surya s/o Krishnan

When are you going to do a straight Telugu film?
I don’t want to be a dubbing hero. When I do a straight Telugu film, I want to contribute more with my own dubbing. I will dedicate my time and energies when I do straight Telugu film.

You got terrific romantic scenes in Ghajini and Surya s/o Krishnan. What kind of person are you in real life?
I am boring guy and not a romantic person at all. And thanks to those romantic stories in my movies, I got lots of female fans.

How did Jyothika fall in love with you if you were not a romantic person?
Opposite sides attract. She liked me because I am sober.

Who are the most talented actresses you worked with?

1. Asin: She is really good. I like the way she come up in Hindi film industry. She proved herself in Bollywood.
2. Trisha: She is a fabulous actress.
3. Tamanna: She is not even 20 and she made a name for herself. She is very sincere at her work.

You did Pithamagan in the past. Are you open for multi-starrers now?
I neither work for money nor for satisfying my personal ego. I always keep the interest of my fans in mind before accepting any movie. I will do any multi-starrer as long as it entertains my fans. I have to make sure that my character is justified.

How frequently do you browse internet?
I started surfing internet recently. I visit my fan community in Orkut. I also browse IMDB. I view videos in Youtube. For Telugu films information, I mostly visit idlebrain.com.

What are your future projects?
My next film will be directed by KS Ravi Kumar. I will do a character with grey shades in that movie. I accepted another film in the direction of Hari. I will play the role of a cop in that movie.

Interview with Ram Gopal Varma

What is the reason for introducing Nitin in Hindi with Agyaat?
Agyaat is not prepared as a launch pad for a hero. In this movie Agyaat (unknown) is the hero and jungle is the heroine. I saw Nitin somewhere and found him to be appealing. Hence Nitin was the first choice for me when I designed assistant director character in Agyaat film.

Revealing the synopsis is not a thing that is followed in Indian film industry. Was it a deliberate ploy to doctor the minds of audiences when you revealed the story of Agyaat?
Hiding the story is an out-dated concept that is still being followed in Indian movies. I do reveal the story and expect the audience to watch the movie and appreciate the process of telling the story. No matter how much you hide about the story, the reviewers are going to reveal it on the day one. Then why conceal the story? By revealing the story I am targeting the target film viewers and preparing them what to expect from the film.

How difficult is it to make a thriller?
Making a film of drama/comedy genre is dependent on writing and performances. Thrillers succeed on technical agility and narrative. Agyaat is about playing with the imagination of the audiences. The movement of camera becomes a character in the movie.

In the two songs you projected in the audio function, the first song had lots of fast-editing cuts and the second song has slow and smooth camera movements?
I always feel that camera work should capture the emotional quotient of the scene/song. The first song was like a music video with fast editing cuts. The second song is about exploring the romantic feelings; hence I used gentle movement of camera.

Tell us about the forest in which you shot Agyaat?
Agyaat was shot in Sigiriya Jungle in Srilanka. It is the most frightening forest I had ever seen. When I asked my unit to come to that forest they were scared. And I told them that you could die even if I you stay in Taj hotel if your time is bad. I somehow convinced my crew to venture into that forest. Since we were a big crew, animals like Elephants and Tigers kept away from us. But that forest is known for deadly snakes and we took all the precautions. Fortunately nothing unfortunate did happen in the jungle.

Why are you fascinated with jungles?
I don’t know why people are scared about jungles. Our ancestors came from jungles. May be we got used to structured infrastructure. Being an imaginative guy, I like jungles. Forest is a character in Agyaat movie.

Any plans to make a movie on LTTE?
The LTTE movement doesn’t interest me. But I am fascinated by Islamic Fundamentalism. I might make a movie on that in the future.

Tell us about Taj incidence happened in last year. What is your experience with it?
I was in Versova with a friend when I heard a big sound. I suspected it to be a bomb. Then I got a sms saying about a shootout in Leopold Cafe. When I went to check out on TV, confusion was prevailing among the media people about what to report. It took around two hours to understand the gravity of situation. Later on I came to know that the bomb sound I heard came from the taxi that blew up in Vile Parle. It looked so unrealistic. Officers of big stature were killed, though accidentally.

What about your visit along with the chief minister to Taj?
The media has blown it out proportion. On the crime scene, it was all confusion. Where as TV media took an advantage of it by churning stories out of speculations. I have lots of regard to CNN/IBN which didn’t show a single dead body in their 911 coverage.

Why are there no films made on these ghastly incidents unlike in Hollywood?
In USA, the filmmakers are protected by freedom of speech. But in India, there is freedom of speech. But it is not followed practically though it is our right. Some organization will prop up and make it a big issue. There will be political pressures. Nobody is allowed to make a movie on Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in India because of political pressure. There are censor board problems as well.

Tell us about Rakth Charitra?
We will start shooting from the first week of October and we are planning to shoot in real locations like Anantapuram, Maddela Cheruvu eetc. I am going to show the human side of factionists. There are no good or bad people. They become good or bad because of the situations and circumstances. These people create situations to favour them and over a period of time they become victims of the situations they created. I am taking a life story of few individuals that happened over a period of 20 years. I am projecting personal conflict of Paritala Ravi and Suri in this movie. I am doing this film in two parts. The first part will end with the bomb blast happened at Rama Naidu studios and the introduction of Suri’s character.

Tell us about Rann?
Rann deals with the political conspiracy to use media to manipulate the emotions of a common man. The shooting of the film is over and we are planning to release the movie in November.

How different are Telugu TV channels compared to national TV channels?
I am surprised to see the street language used in Telugu TV channels. They try to build hatred among the viewers towards certain religion/people. Telugu TV channels are highly offensive and they don’t have even 10% of sensibilities of national media. They are trying to catering to raw sense of viewers in order to increase their TRP ratings.

What about fuss being made about Jana Gana Mana in Rann?
Jana Gana Mana was written by Rabindranath Tagore 60 years back by keeping that era in mind. Things have changed now and my Jana Gana Mana represents that current society. Censor board passed it. I don’t know why certain section of people are grudging about it.

AR Rehman remixed Vandemataram and nobody objected it. And you wrote Jana Gana Mana and there are protests. Has it something to do with your controversial reputation?
(smiles). I have no problems with it as long as it converts into good publicity and there by good openings to the movie.

Your debut movie Shiva changed the history of Telugu films forever. We haven’t seen any other film with same intensity from you. What is the reason for it?
I don’t agree with the statement that Shiva is a trend setter or a path breaker. If Shiva set a trend, why they are making same old out-dated stories/concepts even after 20 years of release of Shiva? Shiva was psychologically and technically advanced movie in those days and it gave a ‘shock value’ to the viewers. I feel that Satya is a far more greater and superior film than Shiva. If you look at the chain-pulling shot, it caters to the adrenalin rush factor. Though it was a juvenile shot, it got me so much of reputation. Many films I made are greater than Shiva, but they couldn’t provide a better shock value to audiences than Shiva.

Lots of Telugu debutant directors are stating you as their role model. What is your reaction to it?
Directing is nothing but expressing one’s personality. Don’t imitate others. Try to bring out originality that belongs to you.

Trade Talk: Simply ‘Simha’

The time has come to have a look at what is happening at the box office and it is clearly evident that only one name is standing tall. Yes, the ‘Simha’ mania continues and reports of record breaking collections are still flowing in taking the film to a super hit.

‘Simha’ is followed by young rebel star Prabhas and the saucy seductress Kajal Agarwal, their movie ‘Darling’ is going through a steady progress. Then there is Allari Naresh who has given the money’s worth through his ‘Betting Bangarraju’ and made Ramoji Rao a happy man.

The intense yet wonderfully made ‘Prasthanam’ has been stuttering a bit but has got critical acclaim. Last but not the least, the magical smile of Samantha is still getting repeat audience to the movie ‘Ye Maaya Chesaave’. Overall, the ‘Simha’ roar is going rather strong.

Simha success meet

Success meet of Bala Krishna’s latest blockbuster Simha was held at Cinemax on the night of 6 May. Bala Krishna, Boyapati Seenu, Paruchuri Kiriti, Kota, LB Sriram, Chakri, Ram Lakshman, Rajitha, Sravan, Anand, Venu, Siva Subramanyam, Venu Madhav etc attended it.

Director Boyapati Seenu said, “This is my third movie. I narrated the story in 23 minutes when Paruchuri Prasad took me to Bala Krishna. I told him that this is not a dialogue-oriented movie. He likes novelty in movies and he encouraged me. Bala Krishna involved a lot as an actor in this movie.”

My prediction of Simha hunting records became true – Bala Krishna
Bala Krishna said, “Simha is creating new records of Telugu film industry. I would like to thank my fans and Telugu film lovers for making Simha such a gigantic hit. I casually grew my moustache and beard. When I attended functions, people started liking it. We tried the same get-up for flashback episode in the movie. We have shown some burning issues in our society and there were received well by the crowds. The two roles I had done in this movie are new and I didn’t do such roles in the past. I told in music success meet that Simha will hunt the records and it became true now.”

Simha collected a share of 26.45 crores in 1 week – Paruchuri Prasad
Paruchuri Prasad said, “This is my fourth film. I expected this movie to become a hit, but such a stupendous success surprised us. My banner has become a part in this history. Chakri is my friend and he composed nice music. I was little tensed before the release, but had a huge sigh of relief on the day one with terrific mouth talk. It is not only doing well in India, but also received stupendous response in abroad including USA and Australia. Simha has collected a share of 26.45 crores in the first week. Ladies are also thronging to theatres from the day one. We controlled the piracy and it helped in collections. I am donating 5 lacs to Police welfare fund as a token of appreciation for taking strict action against piracy.”
