An Andhraite's open letter to Chidamabaram
Dear Home Minister:
I am writing to you convinced that extraordinary times demand extraordinary means of response. I was one among the crores of people who watched your 11:30 pm telecast on Wednesday, where your Government conceded to the demand of a separate Telengana, in a state of silent shock. Even as you briefed the press in your patented methodical tone and clipped accent, I could not help but wonder what in your briefing was so important that it necessitated a 11:30 pm press conference. Was there a grave threat to national security that warranted you, the home minister of the Country to come and address a press conference at that unearthly hour? Was Hyderabad on the verge of being vandalized by forces that, come morning , would be unstoppable? I did not see the home minister of India on the telly on 26th November when Kasab & Co were showering bullets in Mumbai. Did you have any intelligence that 10/12 was going to be Hyderabad’s 26/11?
A few weeks ago you participated in a show with Barkha Dutt on National TV and at the end of the show you expressed a “keen desire” in wanting to know “why and how people chose their leaders”. Here is an answer from all the crores of voters who voted for your party the Congress in the April 2009 polls. We voted for the Congress because we believed that the Congress under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi would abide by the single state theory plank on which it won a hard fought electoral battle. And just in case it skipped the attention of the core committee, here is some news for them as well. One of the vanquished in that historic election was KCR’s TRS. On that plank our late C M Dr YSR gift wrapped 33 MPs to Delhi – the single largest contingent in the Country! And yet within 100-days of his tragic death you have set in motion the division of the state bowing to the demands of a leader whose party did not have the conviction to contest in Hyderabad’s municipal elections.
Yesterday morning in a spontaneous gesture of protest, over Delhi’s decision, 70 MLAs from the state of Andhra Pradesh have tendered their resignations. By yesterday evening thousands of students in Universities in Andhra have resorted to agitations demanding a single A.P. What sir is your response to these developments? We are also keen to know what your response would be GJM and the many such demands that would crop up? Would you hold similar midnight press conferences and watch the “aspirations” of the people get fulfilled. Would your esteemed colleague Mr Veerappa Moily show the same liberal attitude towards the demand for a separate state of Coorg in his home state Karnataka? Or is this magnanimity, only reserved for the people of Andhra. Kindly share your wisdom with the people of the state of Andhra Pradesh. If nothing else we deserve to know why brothers have been pitted against brothers and why we are treated like intruders in our own state.
Looking forward to your response sir.
